We brought in 9 new student-athletes to join our program this year.  Here’s a look a the newest Black Bears:

Lavar Harewood, 6-3 Guard, Brooklyn, NY – Lavar is a 6-3 scoring guard coming to Orono after a very successful career at the Brooks School in Massachusetts.  Lavar is a strong, athletic guard with a smooth shooting stroke and great lift on his jump shot.  He comes from a great academic environment at Brooks and played for a great coach in John McVeigh.  Lavar has the physical ability to be an outstanding defender for us.

Devine Eke, 6-7 Forward, Irvington, NJ – Devine is a tremendous athlete who plays with an energy I’m certain Black Bear fans will come to love.  He is an excellent rebounder on both ends of the floor and runs the floor extremely well.  He has the ability to guard wings as well as bigger post players, and he can provide a rim protector at the back of our defense with his athleticism. Devine comes to us after spending a prep year at the Robinson School in New Jersey.

Ilija Stojiljkovic, 6-7 Forward, Nis, Serbia – Ilija is a skilled forward with great feel for the game.  Ilija came over from his native Serbia to spend a prep year at Lee Academy last year, where Aaron Calixte also attended prep school.  He is an outstanding competitor with high level skills and a great basketball IQ.  His versatility makes him a tough match-up, as he can shoot from distance, drive and create as well as score close to the hoop.  Ilija is the type of player you like to give the ball to and allow him to make plays.

Issac Vann, 6-5 Wing, Stratford, CT – Issac (yes, it’s spelled with two S’s) is an athletic 6-5 wing who is great in the open floor and has a natural ability to score.  He runs the floor extremely well and has an explosive bounce when finishing at the rim.  He’s strong enough to guard four positions and skilled enough to make plays for himself and his teammates.  Issac spent last year prepping at Coastal Academy in New Jersey, the same prep school that Kevin Little attended.

Vincent Eze, 6-8 Forward/Center, Bethlehem, PA/Nigeria – Vincent is a strong, athletic 6-8 post player who gives us a formidable presence in the middle of our defense.  Originally from Nigeria, Vincent came to the states to attend high school in Pennsylvania and spent last year at Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut.  Vince is a great athlete who can really run the floor and has the strength to finish at the rim, and should provide an intimidating presence on the defensive end.

Ryan “Boz” Bernstein, 6-0, Point Guard – Bronxville, NY – “Boz” is a gym rat and a floor general who plays with something to prove on every possession.  His athleticism often gets overlooked because of his unselfish mentality and ability to quarterback his team. He’s a true point guard with great toughness and an ability to make his teammates better.  Boz started at Stepinac High School (White Plains, NY) in the New York City Catholic league before attending Marinapolis Prep (CT) in the NEPSAC, so he’s tested himself in two of the best basketball leagues in the country.

Dennis Ashley, 6-0 Shooting Guard, Santa Monica, CA – Dennis spent last year in Maine, prepping at Bridgton Academy and playing for a great coach in Whit Lesure.  He’s a big time shooter with a pure stroke who can help us space the floor and stretch the defense.  He’s the kind of player you have to account for on every possession because of his ability to knock down shots in bunches, and he’s another kid who plays with a chip on his shoulder.

Walter King, 6-0 Guard, Peekskill, NY – Walter is a strong, athletic, physical guard who can play either position in the backcourt.  He was a teammate of Ryan Bernstein’s at Stepinac High School before prepping at Lee Academy, where he was a teammate of Ilija Stojiljkovic.  Walter can be a great defender and a ballhawk in the back court, and is a quick creator off the dribble who gained valuable experience running a team last year at Lee.

Wesley Myers, 6-2 Guard, Brooklyn, NY – Wesley comes to us from Niagara University, where he averaged 9 points and 3 rebounds as a sophomore, while shooting 42% of his 3-pointers.  Wes is a natural scorer who can play either guard position and score in a lot of different ways.  He played his high school ball at Boys and Girls in Brooklyn where he helped his team to 3 straight PSAL Titles.  Wes will sit out this year per NCAA transfer rules and will have 2 years left to compete starting with 2016-17.
