A Time magazine article on how being “too loyal” was a big career mistake. Lots of parallels to the coaching business here.
It made me think about –
- Being naive – not matter how good a job you are doing or how good your relationship is with your boss, he’s always going to do what he considers to be best for the program.
- Personal relationships – if you really want to coach, the job will choose you early in your career. You have to be ready to move.
- Excuses – you can always find reasons to stay if you don’t want to deal with the hassle of leaving.
- Leadership changes – a new president, a new athletic director, budget cuts and a change in philosophy or direction are just a few examples of things that can happen that you can’t control.
