The best leaders I’ve coached…

  • Bring positive energy into the gym every day
  • Hold themselves accountable first and foremost
  • Are passionate about basketball
  • Refuse to tolerate bad behavior
  • Are thirsty for coaching
  • Take pride in getting stops
  • See value in confrontation when necessary
  • Never hold a grudge after confrontation
  • Don’t say they just “lead by example”
  • Enjoy conditioning
  • Hate lazy pick-up games
  • Have fun in practice
  • Are genuinely curious about their teammates mindset
  • Hold themselves to the highest standard
  • Make the head coach better with their commitment level
  • Speak up when their voice needs to be heard
  • Don’t speak up just to hear their own voice
  • Love winning drills in practice
  • Never say “I didn’t think it was my place” to say something
  • Don’t take any days for granted
  • Take pride in every possession
  • Challenge the coaches to make them better in a positive way
  • Never challenge the coaches in a negative way
  • Talk positively when the coaches aren’t around
  • Are selectively loud – raise their voice only when necessary
  • Always give their teammates two things – confidence and credit
  • Embrace failure as fuel to make them better
  • Love to compete
  • Have their eyes locked in on a coach who is talking
  • Start more sentences with “my fault” than “Why didn’t you?…”
  • Don’t see any value in drawing unnecessary attention to themselves
  • Run sprints with their teammates who screwed up
  • Take ownership of the actions of the team
  • Understand the value of process over result
