Kyle Smith and I went to college together at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. My first on-the-floor assistant coaching job at the D1 level was at San Diego, where I was an assistant with Kyle for one year under Brad Holland.
That year in San Diego Kyle and I used to order pizza after practice just about every day and take the practice film home, and we started analyzing it and statting it out. We came up with about 8 different categories that we graded, giving each player a numerical rating for their output in practice.
Today Kyle has almost 60 categories in his “Nerdball” system and he just got the job at Washington State. Without question one of the smartest basketball coaches I know.
