There are plenty of people in my life who I like, who I enjoy spending time with – but who I don’t want to try and win with. Winning is a a completely separate equation. It requires a level of commitment and trust that is uncommon in most of our everyday relationships.

So just because we have a good relationship and we can have fun together, that doesn’t mean I’m trying to win with you. What it takes to win is on a completely different level than what it takes for us to have a friendly relationship. I’m coaching all of my players to make them better, but as I’m doing it I’m figuring out who I can win with.

  • If you don’t treat our team managers with respect I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you show up late for class I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you are disrespectful to the people who work in the cafeteria I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you complain about the free stuff you get I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you aren’t disciplined enough to get your work done in study hall I’m not sure if I can win with you.
  • If you won’t pick up after yourself I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you tell me you didn’t get my text I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you are grabbing a box score right after the game I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you are listening to your parents in the stands I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If the first word out of your mouth is “But…” after you’ve been coached I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If your go-to is “I didn’t hear you” after you’ve been coached I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If it’s too cold to walk to the gym to get some shots up I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If scouting reports aren’t important to you I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If your teammates don’t want you on their team during pick-up I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If winning those pick-up games doesn’t matter to you I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you are skipping reps in the weight room I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you don’t respect your parents or other family members I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you don’t know your professors names I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you won’t dive on a loose ball I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you won’t keep your body in front of a driver I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you stand still when a shot goes up I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you don’t have the right balance in your life I’m not sure if I can win with you.
  • If you don’t touch the lines I’m not sure I can win with you.
  • If you can’t be trusted I know I can’t win with you.
